Otago and Canterbury Universities have set up an experimental virtual world grid using the OpenSimulator platform (www.opensimulator.org). More information about this grid can be found:

The vision for this grid is to expand the experimental setup and form a National Virtual World Grid that will give NZ teritary educators, researchers and senior students an accelerated opportunity to play an internationally innovative role in the emerging field of Web 3.D technology.
