ONGENS Test Bed Facility

The University of Otago understands the educational, economic and collaborative opportunities surrounding the convergence occurring in global telecommunications. Rapid changes in the telecommunications arena are leading to both a convergence of technical resources and an opening up of network architectures.

The University has established a national and international test bed facility to realise the tangible benefits to New Zealand from these opportunities. The Otago Next Generation Networks and Services (ONGENS) Test Bed is supported by the Global Network Interconnectivity Project which is funded by the Tertiary Education Commission Growth and Innovation Pilot Initiative.

The test lab has been established as a facility for the trial and test of advanced distributed networking applications, multi-processing applications.

In particular, the ONGENS test lab has been established as NZ's leading facility for testing JAIN SLEE applications.

There are three primary aims of the test lab:

  1. provide an education and training facility relating to convergent technologies and applications
  2. provide a research facility where researchers are encouraged to undertake projects with a practical, theoretical or commercial focus
  3. provide an internationally rated test bed facility where vendors can have software and systems tested, calibrated and verified by an independent, authenticated and recognised facility.

The ONGENS test lab is designed with research and commercial applications in mind. The sort of applications that can be evaluated and tested within this facility are varied, including:

  • Telecommunications applications
  • Networking applications
  • Media applications - virtual reality, augmented reality, VOIP applications
  • Data analysis and data mining
